Electrical Power Research Laboratory (EPRL)

Electrical Power Research Laboratory (EPRL) provides comprehensive testing services for various types of transformers used in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

Our laboratory is equipped with advanced testing infrastructure and modern measuring instruments to ensure accurate and reliable results in accordance with national and international standards.

EPRL is committed to supporting manufacturers, utilities, and EPC contractors in ensuring the performance, safety, and reliability of transformers.

Testing Standards

All testing activities are conducted as per recognized national and international standards:

  • IS 1180 Part 1 – Distribution Transformers (Mineral Oil Filled)
  • IS 1180 Part 3 – Distribution Transformers (Ester Filled)
  • IS 2026 – Power Transformers
  • IEC 60076 – International Standard for Power Transformers
  • CBIP Manual on Transformers

EPRL performs various tests as per applicable transformer standards:

  • Measurement of winding resistance
  • Measurement of voltage ratio and check of phase displacement
  • Measurement of short-circuit impedance(principal tapping, when applicable) and load loss at 50 percent and 100 percent load
  • Measurement of no-load loss and current
  • Measurement of insulation resistance
  • Induced over-voltage withstand test
  • Separate-source voltage withstand test
  • Pressure test
  • Oil leakage test
  • Lightning impulse test
  • Temperature-rise test
  • Pressure test
  • Determination of sound levels
  • No load current at 112.5 percent voltage
  • Paint adhesion tests.
  • BDV and moisture content of oil in the transformer
  • Measurement of Zero Sequence Impedance of three phase Transformers
  • Magnetic Balance Test
  • Measurement of the Harmonics of the no-load current
  • Measurement of Neutral current
